Britain’s growing digital construction and technology sectors are set to benefit from a major investment in artificial intelligence talent, as the government launches a new programme offering full master’s funding for exceptional students. The Spärck AI Scholarships, announced by the Technology Secretary, will provide full financial support for postgraduate study in AI and STEM subjects at nine leading UK universities, to cement the UK’s position as a global leader in artificial intelligence innovation.
The initiative, named after pioneering British computer scientist Karen Spärck Jones, is designed to attract top students from both the UK and abroad to institutions including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, Southampton, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester and Bristol. Each university will co-design and co-fund the programme in collaboration with government and industry.
Building the next generation of AI experts
Backed by £17.6 million in government funding, the scholarships will provide not only full tuition but also living expenses, enabling students from all backgrounds to access advanced education in artificial intelligence and data science. The scheme will initially support at least 100 students, who will also benefit from industry placements and mentorship through partnerships with leading technology companies including Darktrace, Faculty, Quantexa, PolyAI, CausaLens, Flok, and Beamery.
The initiative forms part of the government’s Plan for Change, aimed at driving economic growth through innovation and expanding the UK’s pipeline of digital and technology skills. By connecting academia with industry, the programme will give graduates a direct route into highly skilled jobs and help meet demand for AI professionals across sectors such as digital construction, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said the scholarships offer “unique opportunities for talented young people to take up master’s degrees in AI, with fully funded tuition and unparalleled access to industry.” He added that the programme will “build a workforce fit for the future and boost economic growth,” while also ensuring that students from underrepresented or low-income backgrounds can pursue postgraduate education.
Expanding the UK’s AI leadership
Alongside the scholarships, the government has announced an expansion of its Turing AI Fellowships, introducing a new Pioneer Fellowship stream. This will support experienced professionals from fields such as science, the humanities, academia and industry to apply AI to specific challenges in their disciplines. Backed by £25.2 million in funding, the fellowships will offer research support, mentorship and industry collaboration to accelerate innovation and strengthen the UK’s AI ecosystem.
These initiatives align with the AI Opportunities Action Plan and contribute to the forthcoming Digital and Tech Sector Plan under the Industrial Strategy. Together, they represent a strategic investment in the skills and research capacity needed to harness AI across industries, from construction and manufacturing to healthcare and climate research.
Supporting a digitally skilled workforce
The Spärck AI Scholarships complement the government’s wider national skills drive, announced during London Tech Week, which aims to equip millions of people with digital and AI skills. Applications for the scholarships will open in spring 2026, with the first cohort beginning their studies in October 2026.
As artificial intelligence continues to shape the digital construction and technology landscapes, initiatives like the Spärck AI Scholarships and Turing Pioneer Fellowships are vital to ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of innovation. By investing in world-class education and industry collaboration, the government is laying the foundation for a more skilled, competitive, and resilient digital economy.
