App for construction site training barriers

by Simon Foulds

A new mobile learning app aims to improve access to construction site training across diverse workforces.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School has launched a mobile-first multilingual learning app designed to address persistent barriers to training access within the digital construction sector. With an initial focus on Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR), the platform introduces an accessible, site-ready solution aligned with industry-wide skills and culture priorities.

Tackling on-site training barriers in construction

Access to training remains a structural challenge across construction projects, particularly for site-based workers. Time constraints, language diversity and limited access to digital tools continue to restrict engagement with traditional learning platforms.

The newly launched app addresses these constraints through a streamlined user experience. Workers can log in using a mobile phone number, removing the need for complex onboarding. Content is structured into modules lasting under five minutes, enabling integration into daily site routines without disruption.

Available in English, Bulgarian, Lithuanian, Polish, Punjabi and Romanian, the app directly responds to the multilingual nature of the UK construction workforce. This supports improved knowledge transfer and aligns with wider digital construction strategies focused on inclusivity and workforce development.

Fairness, inclusion and respect training modules

The first release includes six FIR modules, with plans to expand to thirteen later this year. Each module combines scenario-based learning with short quizzes to reinforce behavioural outcomes. Real site workers feature throughout the content, ensuring practical relevance and authenticity.

The FIR content has been funded through the Construction Industry Training Board Industry Impact Fund, which supports scalable and sustainable training solutions across the sector.

Dana James-Edwards, Head of Fairness, Inclusion and Respect at the School, said: “This app has been created through partnership and collaboration across the industry and is more than just a learning platform – it’s a catalyst for change. Whether it’s understanding difference, learning how to speak up to call out poor behaviour, or strengthening team culture, site workers now have access to simple, on-the-go content that helps build respectful and inclusive workplaces, in the palm of their hands.”

Industry collaboration driving digital learning innovation

The development of the app reflects collaboration across major contractors and public sector stakeholders, including Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Barratt Developments, M Group Services and Transport for London. Additional partners include Places for London, London Legacy Development Corporation, Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Tim Balcon, CEO of CITB, commented: “We were delighted to support this project with funding through the CITB Industry Impact Fund. The Fund supports projects that shape the future of construction, boosting skills, innovation and collaboration. It gives employers the power to design and develop training solutions that don’t already exist – ensuring they are scalable, sustainable and make a lasting impact.”

Heidi Cokayne, Head of People, Rail at Morgan Sindall Infrastructure,  added: “We’re proud to help make fairness, inclusion, and respect accessible to everyone. This app provides bite-sized guidance, easy access, and multiple languages, ensuring no one is left behind. Built in collaboration with the industry, it’s a tool designed to open doors for all.”

Supporting workforce growth and retention

With forecasts indicating a requirement for 266,000 new construction workers by 2026, scalable digital training solutions are becoming essential. The app aligns with sector priorities to improve workforce retention, strengthen site culture and enhance productivity through accessible learning.

Future content releases planned for 2026 and beyond will expand the platform into a broader digital learning ecosystem for the built environment. This roadmap positions the app as a long-term component of digital transformation strategies across construction.

By prioritising accessibility, collaboration and workforce needs, this mobile learning app sets a benchmark for inclusive digital construction training, supporting sustainable skills development and measurable cultural improvement across sites.
