Balfour Beatty joint venture picked for £642m Hong Kong towers

Balfour Beatty’s 50:50 joint venture, Gammon, has secured a project duo worth HK$6.1bn (£642m) to build two new government buildings and five residential towers in Kowloon, Hong Kong.

The HK$2.7bn Kwun Tong Composite Development, commissioned by the Architectural Services Department, commits Gammon to design and build a 25-storey building to house a new college and a nine-storey building for community and welfare amenities.

Gammon will use offsite, precast methods as well as its digital solution, known as ‘Stamp’, for project management, material delivery, and installation.

Kevin O’Brien, chief executive at Gammon, said: “We will embrace modern methods of construction throughout, which will allow us to drive improvements in safety, quality, and waste reduction.”

The Kwun Tong project is scheduled for completion in 2026 and will employ around 1,400 people at peak construction.

The second project, the HK$3.4bn Ho Man Tin Package One, is for five residential towers for developer Great Eagle Group. Together, they will provide 990 new apartments above the Ho Man Tin underground MTR Station.

On this project Gammon will use an electric battery storage system to power machinery to cut the need for diesel generators.

The Ho Man Tin Package One will complete in 2024 and at peak will employ around 1,200 people.
