The head of BIM international at Mace has been named as a Young Engineer of the Year by the Royal Academy of Engineers (RAEng).
Dr Marzia Bolpagni – one of five engineers recognised in the RAEng Engineers Trust Young Engineer of the Year competition – was named the overall competition winner, receiving the RAEng’s prestigious Sir George Macfarlane Medal in recognition of her achievements.
The competition recognises engineers in full-time higher education, research or industrial employment who have demonstrated excellence in the early stage of their career (defined as fewer than 10 years since graduation from their first degree in engineering).
Dr Bolpagni overcome competition from four other young engineers, whose fields of work span AI processing and cancer research.
All five Young Engineers receive awards of £3,000.
‘A game-changer’
Commenting on her awards, Dr Bolpagni said: “I am extremely honoured to receive these awards. It is an achievement for the entire digital engineering community that has been recognised as a game-changer among different engineering disciplines, across all sectors.
“Our role is key to pursue a sustainable world and transform the industries and organisations we work in.
“I am determined to continue working with talented industry experts to enhance the impact of our sector.”
Dr Anne Kemp OBE, UK BIM Alliance chair, added: “I couldn’t be more thrilled for Marzia.
“Having first met her while she was doing her PhD in Milan, it has been marvellous to see Marzia go from strength to strength in her career, not only providing value to her employers, but contributing massively on the European/UK standards development stage – often amid emotionally charged arguments and debate. Marzia doesn’t give up.
“I am proud that we have her as an ambassador for the Alliance and hugely grateful to her for her continuing contributions to the UK BIM Framework Guidance.”
Dr Bolpagni is a UK BIM Alliance ambassador and has served as a member of the ACE Digital Transformation Group since 2019.
She is also the lead author of a European standard (BS EN 17412-1) on digital engineering.
