Driving digital transformation in UK road infrastructure

by Simon Foulds

National Highways has appointed Vivek Chaudhri as Non-Executive Director, strengthening digital leadership across infrastructure delivery.

Vivek Chaudhri will join the Board on 2 March, succeeding Janette Beinart, who steps down after seven years of service. During her tenure, Beinart also served as interim Chair, contributing to governance continuity across the organisation’s strategic transition period.

Chair Gareth Rhys Williams confirmed the appointment, stating: “Vivek has a wide range of technical knowledge and extensive experience in cyber and operations. He has a strong customer and delivery focus, so is the perfect fit for our Board.

“I would like to thank Janette Beinart for her commitment and dedication to National Highways over the years, including acting as interim Chair prior to my tenure starting. We will miss working with her.”

Digital construction and infrastructure transformation expertise

Chaudhri brings senior leadership experience across digital transformation, data strategy, and artificial intelligence in global organisations, including ITC Infotech, BAT, Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer, and Eli Lilly.

His appointment aligns with increasing demand for digital construction leadership, data-driven asset management, and AI-enabled infrastructure across the UK highways sector. He is also co-founder of the Global Artificial Intelligence Leaders Network, reflecting his role in advancing enterprise AI adoption.

Vivek Chaudhri said: “I understand the level of challenges and cultural change National Highways will face over the coming years as the use of technology becomes more prevalent. I hope I can add real value to the delivery of the organisation’s purpose thanks to my years spent working in digital, data and artificial intelligence. I am looking forward to joining the team at my first Board meeting on March 31.”

Strengthening digital governance in UK road networks

As a Non-Executive Director, Chaudhri will contribute to the Nominations, Remuneration, and Safety Committees, supporting governance across digital infrastructure strategy, operational resilience, and cyber security in construction delivery.

National Highways operates, maintains, and improves over 4,300 miles of motorways and major A-roads, making digital transformation central to performance, safety, and long-term infrastructure planning across England’s strategic road network.

This appointment signals continued integration of digital, data and AI capabilities into infrastructure governance, supporting delivery efficiency, safety outcomes, and long-term resilience across the UK strategic road network.
