The UK government has approved the country’s largest power-producing solar farm, marking a further step in its drive to expand domestic renewable energy capacity.
According to its developer, the 800 MW Springwell Solar Farm could generate enough electricity to supply more than 180,000 homes annually – roughly equivalent to half of all households in Lincolnshire.
The decision, announced by the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero, represents the 25th nationally significant clean energy project approved since July 2024. Collectively, these projects are expected to produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of more than 12.5m homes.
Ministers said the approval reflects efforts to accelerate the rollout of “homegrown” energy sources amid continued global instability. Ongoing conflicts, including in Ukraine and the Middle East, have highlighted the risks associated with reliance on international fossil fuel markets.
Solar power is regarded by the government as one of the cheapest forms of electricity generation currently available. The latest decision forms part of a wider policy programme aimed at increasing solar deployment across the UK. Measures include proposals to expand plug-in solar installations in retail settings and to require solar panels as standard on new homes in England.
Energy minister Michael Shanks said the government was acting to strengthen energy security while reducing costs. He said: “We are driving further and faster for clean homegrown power that we control to protect the British people and bring down bills for good.
“It is crucial we learn the lessons of the conflict in the Middle East – solar is one of the cheapest forms of power available and is how we get off the rollercoaster of international fossil fuel markets and secure our own energy independence.”
The government has also indicated it will fast-track the next renewables auction to July as part of efforts to expand capacity more rapidly.
