Jet Plant Hire completed high-volume night works on the M4, demonstrating coordinated digital construction delivery nationwide.
Jet Plant Hire has completed a programme of high-volume night works on the M4 motorway, supporting its long-term partner, Associated Asphalt, on a critical resurfacing scheme. The project was delivered on time through tightly managed night-time operations, reducing disruption to road users while improving carriageway performance.
Delivered in two phases, the initial works were completed during restricted night-time hours between 22:00 and 05:00. This approach aligned with National Highways’ requirements for motorway resurfacing projects, ensuring daytime traffic flows were maintained on one of the UK’s busiest routes.
Coordinated planning and resurfacing operations
Associated Asphalt resurfaced 12 kilometres of the M4 eastbound carriageway, with Jet Plant Hire providing road planning services within a three-hour operational window each night. This limited timeframe was critical to allow sufficient time for surfacing, curing, white lining, and full traffic management removal ahead of strict morning reopening deadlines.
The scope included sections across all four lanes, including the hard shoulder, with planning depths reaching up to 100 millimetres. To maintain programme certainty, dual planning and surfacing gangs were deployed, doubling nightly output and supporting consistent progress throughout the works.
Material management and recycling outcomes
Across the project, Jet Plant Hire planned and transported approximately 21,000 tonnes of material for recycling or reuse. The logistics of material removal were managed through precise coordination between teams, vehicles, and nighttime access windows, supporting sustainable outcomes within a live motorway environment.
Following the successful completion of the eastbound works, Jet Plant Hire was appointed to deliver the same scope on the westbound carriageway. These works have now also been completed, reflecting the effectiveness of the delivery model used.
Collaboration and performance on the M4 project
Richard Bowling, Area Manager at Associated Asphalt, said: “Jet were fantastic partners throughout the M4 project. They approached every challenge with a positive, can-do attitude and never once complained about the large tonnages we needed removed within a very restricted working window.
“Their honesty, collaboration, and commitment helped us achieve excellent outputs. The quality and reliability of their equipment were outstanding, and I’d have no hesitation in working with them again on important projects in the future like this one.”
Richard Lovell, Contracts Manager at Jet Plant Hire, added: “This has been a key project for Jet over the last couple of months. We partnered with Associated Asphalt, assisting their team in successfully delivering the high-demand project as planned.
“We were initially asked to deliver works on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 13 and 12. Due to the success of that project and our strong collaboration with the Associated Asphalt team, we were then asked to support with the same scope of work on the westbound carriageway.
“Our planning services, support equipment and close coordination were absolutely vital in maintaining momentum throughout the project. We’re delighted to have completed the project and ensured a vital motorway continues to operate.”
