In a UK first, Kier has trialled a carbon-saving flywheel technology similar to that used in Formula 1 which could reduce the energy required to power a static crane.
Through its work with procurement partner, Sunbelt Rentals, Kier is using PUNCH Flybrid flywheel technology on its Shakespeare North site, to support its strategy to deliver net zero carbon emissions.
The flywheel energy storage system is derived from a similar technology to that used in Formula 1 and decreases fuel usage by reducing the generator size needed to power the crane on site, while still providing enough power for it to be used correctly.
Gary Wintersgill, managing director at Kier Regional Building North & Scotland, said: “At Kier, we are passionate about becoming a more sustainable business and an important element of this is working collaboratively with our supply chain partners to trial brand-new innovative technologies. We are continuing to use the PUNCH Flybrid flywheel technology on the Shakespeare North site and are assessing other sites that could also benefit from it.”
The trial revealed a 40% reduction in fuel consumption which resulted in 40% less carbon being produced.

Kier launched its sustainability framework, Building for a Sustainable World, in October 2020. It focuses on both environmental and social sustainability and as part of this, Kier has committed to achieving net zero carbon across its own operations and supply chain by 2045.
