Modular drone technology for digital construction

by Simon Foulds

Hexadrone’s latest certification milestone strengthens regulatory confidence in modular drone technology supporting digital construction operations.

Hexadrone SAS, a French manufacturer specialising in modular drone systems, has secured CE marking alongside C5 and C6 class certifications for its TUNDRA 2.1 drone. The certification was awarded following an extensive assessment by Applus+ Laboratories, a recognised European notified body, and was issued under EU Regulation 2019/945.

This achievement positions Hexadrone among the first European drone manufacturers to fully comply with the updated European regulatory framework governing unmanned aircraft systems, which becomes fully enforceable on 1 January 2026. For organisations operating within the digital construction sector, including surveying, inspection, and infrastructure monitoring, this compliance offers increased regulatory certainty and operational continuity.

“This certification marks the recognition of our commitment to excellence and compliance,” said Alexandre Labesse, CEO of Hexadrone. “It enables our customers to confidently navigate the regulatory changes of 2026.”

Rigorous certification aligned with future European drone regulations

The certification process confirmed that the TUNDRA 2.1 meets the most stringent technical and safety requirements defined by EU Regulation 2019/945. Oversight by Applus+ Laboratories ensures an independent and transparent evaluation, reinforcing trust among regulators, professional operators, and enterprise users.

For digital construction workflows that rely on drones for topographic surveys, building inspections, and asset management, CE marking and C5/C6 certification provide essential legal and technical assurance. These classifications support advanced operational scenarios, including flights in complex or sensitive environments, while reducing compliance risk for operators.

“As a trusted partner in testing and certification, Applus+ Laboratories is proud to support Hexadrone’s commitment to quality and regulatory compliance,” said an Applus+ Laboratories spokesperson. “Our expertise in European and international standards ensures that innovative solutions like Hexadrone meet the highest safety and performance requirements, enabling their successful expansion in the European market.”

The certification follows 24 months of development and an investment approaching €500,000. As one of the few drone platforms on the market to achieve CE marking alongside C5 and C6 classification, TUNDRA 2.1 strengthens Hexadrone’s standing in both European and international drone markets.

Modular drone technology supporting digital construction use cases

Originally launched in April 2023, the TUNDRA 2 platform gained recognition for its fully modular architecture. The latest TUNDRA 2.1 iteration advances this design through three standardised interfaces: [TR-LOCK], [TR-COMM], and [TR-MODULE]. These enable rapid integration of payloads, avionics, and data links, supporting diverse digital construction requirements.

Standardisation has facilitated the creation of an ecosystem exceeding 150 interoperable components developed with French and European partners. This approach delivers an open, scalable, and backward-compatible drone platform designed to avoid technological obsolescence while incorporating operational feedback from deployed systems.

Additional safety technologies, developed in collaboration with Drone Rescue System (DRS) and Impact, further enhance operational robustness and regulatory compliance. Already adopted by French armed forces units and European private operators, TUNDRA 2.1 supports missions including industrial inspection, topographic surveying, infrastructure security, precision agriculture, CBRN detection, and search and rescue.

By achieving CE marking and C5/C6 certification, Hexadrone delivers a compliant, future-ready drone platform supporting secure, scalable digital construction operations across Europe.
