Norwegian Geotechnical Institute forms BIM and digital twin committee

The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute has formed a new technical committee with a focus on building information modelling (BIM) and digital twins.

The International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) technical committee TC222 was established in June this year.

The Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), an independent international centre for research and consultancy, has taken the lead role.

The committee will provide a forum for ISSMGE members to disseminate and exchange knowledge and practice on building information modelling (BIM) and digital twins in geotechnics.

BIM provides a digital presentation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility and foundation. The BIM model can be used as a knowledge resource in a digital twin, providing a basis for decisions during the life cycle of a structure and its foundation.

Magnus Rømoen, NGI BIM strategist and TC222 chair, said: “BIM and digital twins are important tools in modern soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.

“The level of knowledge and the state-of-the-art varies significantly between countries and continents. We need, for example, to standardise the codes used in the models to get a common language.”

Rømoen leads the committee together with vice chair and  French Geological Survey data architect Mickaël Beaufils; secretary and NGI senior geotechnical engineer Mats Kahlström; and two nominees by the chair, University of Birmingham senior lecturer in digital engineering Jelena Ninic, and Hong Kong Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) senior geotechnical engineer Raymond Koo.

Rømoen concluded: “I am extremely happy to have Mickael, Jelena, Raymond and Mats as members of the TC core team.

“We have quite different backgrounds and daily work, but we all have a large interest in developing BIM and digital twins within geotechnical engineering. I am looking forward to working with the four of them in the upcoming years.”
