ZÜBLIN secures first Australian deal on Melbourne rail loop

Germany’s ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering has secured its first contract in Australia, joining Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop project alongside STRABAG Australia.

The firm will carry out ground freezing works on SRL East, the first section of the Suburban Rail Loop, which will run fully underground between Cheltenham and Box Hill via 26km of twin tunnels. Construction on the section began in 2022 and it is expected to enter service in 2035.

ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering will use its ground freezing expertise and specialist equipment to construct nearly 30 cross passages along the route. The contract was awarded by Suburban Connect – a consortium comprising CPB, Ghella and Acciona – to STRABAG Australia, which will be supported on the works by its subsidiary, Georgiou Group.

The wider Suburban Rail Loop will see a 90km orbital rail line built across Victoria, connecting every major train service in Melbourne and linking suburbs and regional areas to employment, hospitals and universities.

Jörg Löffler, managing director of ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering, said: “This first contract in Australia marks an important milestone for ZÜBLIN Ground Engineering. We are pleased to contribute our expertise to this important infrastructure project. At the same time, the project provides a solid foundation for tapping into further market opportunities in ground engineering in Australia.”
