Suchocki becomes new CICES president

Marek Suchocki has become president of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (CICES), succeeding Alex Pearsall at the institution’s annual general meeting.

Suchocki, a fellow of the institution and a CICES member since 1998, was elected to the role and formally took up the presidency earlier this month.

His presidential theme for the 12-month term is “Innovate, Integrate, Inspire” – a reflection, he said, of principles he has upheld throughout his career.

During his tenure, Suchocki said he will focus on embracing emerging technologies and new ways of working across the civil engineering surveying sector. He also identified strengthening collaboration – both organisationally and technically – and attracting new talent to address skills shortages as priorities.

Suchocki’s career spans more than 35 years across infrastructure delivery, engineering consultancy, operations and technology. It began with British Waterways on the canal network as an undergraduate, and has included roles at Costain, the University of Reading, Atkins, Mouchel and Autodesk.

He has also held several positions within CICES, serving on the Geospatial Engineering Practices Committee for around 10 years and, since 2008, representing the institution on the British Standards B555 committee for construction design, modelling and data exchange. He has sat on CICES’ Council of Management for several years and has supported the development of the institution’s digital competencies, and continues to serve on several of its committees.

Suchocki said: “Becoming a member of CICES was a pivotal point in my career, providing clear validation that forging my own path was both appropriate and merited. Being elected president is an exceptional honour, and it further reinforces for me that pursuing opportunities aligned with one’s own goals and beliefs is not only worthwhile but can be valued and appreciated by peers.”

Simon Hamlyn, chief executive of CICES, said: “Marek’s appointment as president of CICES is a proud moment for the institution and is a fitting recognition of his long-standing commitment to civil engineering surveying. Marek’s depth of experience and knowledge across standards, digital transformation, BIM and collaboration will be invaluable as CICES continues to support its members and champion the profession across the built and natural environment.”
