£107m NHS National Rehabilitation Centre completed

Property and construction consultancy EDGE has completed project management work on the £107m National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC).

The 70-bed facility is operated by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. It sits on the 365-acre Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate at Rempstone, alongside the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC).

The centre will help people regain independence after serious illness or injury. It will house what EDGE described as the most comprehensive robotics suite in the NHS and the UK’s first 360-degree hoist, used to help patients learn to walk again.

Co-location with the DMRC will allow shared access to facilities including hydrotherapy and immersive virtual reality environments.

The NRC will also lead rehabilitation research, working with a network of 26 universities, and will establish an NRC Academy for training and education. It forms part of the government’s New Hospital Programme and was among the first wave of projects to progress.

EDGE said the building is the NHS’s first operationally carbon-neutral facility, supporting the health service’s 2045 net zero goal. It uses solar panels and air source heat pumps.

The consultancy delivered its services from its Nottingham office. These included NEC3 project management, covering coordination of design teams, contractors, and stakeholders, contract management, and oversight of budgets and quality standards. The firm also provided an NEC3 supervisor, technical programme support, and digital services such as drone surveys during construction.

Matt Hill, director at EDGE, said: “Completing the National Rehabilitation Centre is a proud moment for EDGE. This facility truly sets a benchmark for sustainable healthcare design and we’re excited to see it start delivering life-changing care for patients. It has the ability to take rehabilitation services to a new level, both nationally and internationally.

“We enjoyed a strong and transparent working relationship with the Trust and the rest of the project team. Congratulations to everyone involved – this was a true collaborative effort.”

Ryan McCormack, head of construction and commercial at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “EDGE has provided us with project management and NEC Supervisor services. Their team brings a combination of technical expertise, attention to detail with a collaborative, solution-oriented approach.”

EDGE’s healthcare portfolio also includes Cambridge Children’s Hospital and two new adult acute care units for Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.
