MD for Scotland Construction Division

by Simon Foulds

Balfour Beatty has announced the appointment of Nick Rowan as Managing Director of its UK Construction Services Regional Scotland business, effective 4 August 2025.

This strategic leadership change underscores the company’s commitment to nurturing talent and driving sustainable infrastructure growth across Scotland.

30 years of experience

Nick Rowan’s appointment reflects not only his dedication but also Balfour Beatty’s ongoing investment in developing homegrown talent. Having joined the business as a Graduate Surveyor three decades ago, Nick’s rise to Managing Director is a testament to the rewarding career paths available in the construction and infrastructure industry.

A Chartered Surveyor, Nick has played a pivotal role in expanding Balfour Beatty’s Scottish portfolio. His achievements include securing high-profile projects such as the A9 Dualling Scheme for Transport Scotland and the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment offshore programme for SSEN Transmission—both critical components of Scotland’s infrastructure and the UK’s transition to Net Zero.

Leadership transition

Nick succeeds Hector MacAulay, who retires at the end of the year after a remarkable 40-year career with Balfour Beatty, including nearly a decade at the helm of the Regional Scotland business. Hector will remain in an advisory role for several months to ensure a smooth leadership transition.

Nick Crossfield, Divisional CEO of Balfour Beatty’s UK Construction Services, said: “Nick has a deep understanding of Balfour Beatty and the unique challenges and opportunities in Scotland. With a significant pipeline of infrastructure work ahead, Nick is ideally placed to drive sustainable growth and build on Hector’s outstanding legacy. His appointment highlights the long-term career opportunities the construction industry offers to those with talent and dedication.”

Shaping Scotland’s sustainable future

Commenting on his new role, Nick Rowan added: “Scotland plays a crucial role in Balfour Beatty’s growth strategy and in achieving the UK’s Net Zero ambitions. I’m honoured to lead our talented Scotland team at this pivotal time, focusing on delivering world-class, sustainable construction solutions that benefit communities across the country. I also want to thank Hector for his leadership and mentorship over the years. He leaves the business in excellent health and with a clear path forward.”
