Free IT Training for small builders

by Simon Foulds

Small construction firms across the UK are being offered the chance to level up their digital skills with a free IT training programme designed specifically for the sector.

Maria Coulter, award-winning business coach and founder of Construction Coach, has launched Solving Tech for Small Builders – a CITB-funded IT course for SME construction and trade businesses. Following a successful trial with 50 tradespeople, the initiative is now open to 1,000 small firms.

Free IT skills for small builders

The course tackles one of the biggest pain points for smaller firms: using technology effectively. Despite more than a million small construction companies operating in the UK, 94% still rely on spreadsheets for critical tasks such as admin, estimating and planning.

“Understanding IT and how it can help your small business can be the difference between success and failure,” said Maria, who has spent over a decade supporting SMEs in construction. “The right technology, used in the right way, can save money, free up time and give you the confidence to grow.”

What the course includes

Solving Tech for Small Builders offers a practical approach to digital skills in construction, with a focus on tools that can streamline business operations. The programme includes:

  • Identifying where businesses lose time, money, and reputation
  • Choosing the right technology, from AI assistants to project management software
  • Practical advice on pricing projects, managing client relationships, and workforce coordination
  • Fortnightly live Zoom sessions plus recorded lessons for flexible access

Maria describes it as “an IT toolkit for builders” – something that helps business owners view technology as just another essential tool alongside hammers and screwdrivers.

Building confidence and community

The trial phase of the course, funded by the CITB Impact Fund, saw participants report a doubling of confidence in selecting and embedding the right digital tools. Businesses also valued the community element – a peer network of small builders sharing ideas and solutions.

For Maria, the mission is about shifting the culture of the construction industry. “I love the sector, but it’s been slow to modernise. This programme is about professionalism, pricing confidence and better systems that free up time and money.”

Why it matters for SMEs in construction

With rising competition and tighter margins, digital transformation for small construction firms is no longer optional. Effective IT systems can streamline workflows, reduce admin, and improve customer service – giving SMEs the tools to grow sustainably.

The online course launches this September and is open to 1,000 SME construction businesses and trade professionals.
