Spotlight on retrofit and BIA at UKCW 2025

by BiD Admin

Retrofitting has become one of the most pressing priorities for the UK built environment as the sector accelerates towards Net Zero carbon targets. With over 80% of the buildings that will exist in 2050 already standing today, the challenge of upgrading existing stock is central to reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and meeting sustainability goals. Recognising this urgency, UK Construction Week (UKCW) Birmingham 2025 has placed retrofit at the core of its agenda, joining forces with the National Retrofit Hub to deliver a comprehensive programme of seminars and panel discussions.

Taking place from 30 September to 2 October 2025 at the NEC Birmingham, UKCW marks its 10th anniversary under the theme “where decisions are made.” This year’s event will feature over 200 speakers, 150 hours of CPD-accredited talks, and a dedicated focus on retrofit innovation, whole-life carbon reduction, and climate resilience.

Also taking place this year at the UKCW is the Building Innovation Awards.

Celebrate the industry’s trailblazers

The Building Innovation Awards takes place on the evening of 30th September 2025 at Birmingham’s National Conference Centre & Motorbike Museum, across the road form this years UKCW.

From digital disruptors and offsite trailblazers to materials masterminds and sustainability savants, the awards shine a spotlight on the people and projects rewriting the rulebook of the built environment.

And if that wasn’t exciting enough, 2025 sees the Building Innovation Awards join forces with UK Construction Week, one of the awards sponsors. .

Why retrofit matters for the construction industry

Retrofitting is more than an energy upgrade—it is a fundamental strategy for transforming the UK’s housing stock, commercial buildings, and public infrastructure. The benefits include:

  • Reducing carbon emissions: Retrofitting directly addresses operational and embodied carbon.
  • Cutting energy costs: Energy-efficient retrofits lower household bills and improve energy security.
  • Improving occupant wellbeing: Warmer, healthier homes reduce health inequalities.
  • Future-proofing assets: Retrofit increases property value and extends building lifespans.
  • Supporting Net Zero goals: The UK cannot meet its legally binding 2050 target without a large-scale retrofit programme.

At UKCW Birmingham, these themes will be explored across the Main Stage, Housing Action Hub, and Net Zero Hub, ensuring retrofit remains central to industry decision-making.

Examining regulatory frameworks and health co-benefits.

Speakers include: Layla Atassi (Planet Mark), Rachael Owens (National Retrofit Hub), Christine Murphy (New Energy Foundation).

Retrofit connect: Birmingham & Stoke update on street demos

Wednesday 1 October, 1:15pm

  • Case studies on locally led retrofit programmes.
  • Insights into community engagement and equitable delivery.

Retrofit and whole life carbon: what’s the consensus?

Wednesday 1 October, 2:15pm

  • Strategies for tackling whole-life carbon in retrofit.
  • Practical guidance on materials, energy upgrades, and resilience.

Net Zero Hub

Building a sustainable future: retrofitting for climate resilience

Wednesday 1 October, 2:00pm

  • Focus on standards, policy, and innovation in whole-life carbon reduction.
  • Exploring the intersection of design, economics, and community needs.

Speakers include representatives from RIBA, ACAN, Don’t Waste Buildings, and the National Retrofit Hub.

Technology, innovation, and collaboration

Beyond the retrofit sessions, UK Construction Week Birmingham 2025 will feature:

  • Live product demonstrations showcasing retrofit technologies and sustainable materials.
  • Technical workshops offering CPD-accredited training on digital construction, smart energy systems, and modular retrofit solutions.
  • Networking opportunities connecting policymakers, contractors, architects, and suppliers.

The event will also highlight how digital construction tools such as BIM, digital twins, and data-driven energy modelling are revolutionising retrofit delivery.

The role of UKCW in the retrofit transition

As Neil Gaisford, Divisional Director for Construction, notes: “Retrofitting buildings has never been a more crucial part of construction and the pursuit of Net Zero, hence why we’re dedicating so many hours of UKCW seminars to discuss and dissect this important topic.”

By dedicating multiple stages to retrofit, UKCW Birmingham reinforces its role as the UK’s largest event for sustainable construction, energy efficiency, and climate action.

With the climate emergency intensifying, retrofitting the UK’s existing building stock is no longer optional—it is essential. UK Construction Week Birmingham 2025 provides a powerful platform for knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and innovation in retrofit delivery. From policy discussions and consumer insights to cutting-edge technologies and community-led programmes, UKCW will spotlight how retrofit can drive the transformation of the built environment and support the UK’s journey to Net Zero.
