Building AI’s infrastructure to fuel innovation

by Simon Foulds

The UK is accelerating into the next era of digital transformation with NVIDIA and its partners building the nation’s largest AI infrastructure rollout in history. Just three months after Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang announced a strategic collaboration at London Tech Week, the UK has unveiled significant milestones in advancing its AI ecosystem, creating jobs, and laying the foundations for long-term economic growth.

Scaling the UK’s AI factories with NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs

Central to this transformation is the deployment of NVIDIA’s Blackwell GPU architecture, a groundbreaking platform for AI and accelerated computing.

  • NVIDIA is working with AI infrastructure partners including Nscale, CoreWeave and Microsoft to roll out up to 120,000 NVIDIA Blackwell GPUs across UK data centres by 2026.
  • This rollout represents £11 billion in investment, the largest in the country’s history for AI infrastructure.
  • Cloud partner Nscale will additionally scale 300,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs worldwide, with up to 60,000 GPUs dedicated to UK operations.

These “AI factories” will power models from OpenAI and other leaders in generative AI, forming the sovereign infrastructure required for the UK to secure its position as a global hub for AI innovation.

Fuel for digital construction and the built environment

The rise of AI infrastructure in the UK is not only about supercomputing; it is about unlocking real-world applications that transform the built environment. For the digital construction sector, this expansion represents a generational leap forward in how projects are planned, designed, and delivered.

With AI-powered digital twins, predictive analytics, and real-time generative design tools, construction firms will have unprecedented capabilities to improve project delivery, reduce waste, and enhance sustainability. The synergy of AI in construction technology will enable better risk management, faster modelling of infrastructure projects, and streamlined workflows across the supply chain.

Quantum computing and advanced research

NVIDIA’s partnership with Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) is another landmark initiative, integrating quantum computing with AI supercomputers. This collaboration will establish a quantum-GPU AI supercomputing centre in the UK, enabling breakthroughs in sectors including materials science, life sciences, and drug discovery.

This aligns with the UK-US tech partnership priorities in medicine and research, ensuring the UK can leverage AI for transformative societal benefits.

Driving talent and upskilling in AI and robotics

To sustain the momentum of the AI industrial revolution in the UK, workforce development is critical. NVIDIA, in collaboration with techUK and QA, has launched a new R&D hub for AI and robotics, designed to accelerate skills development and foster innovation among UK developers, researchers, and entrepreneurs.

This initiative ensures the UK not only builds the infrastructure but also cultivates the talent pipeline to deliver on its sovereign AI goals. By equipping professionals with AI development, robotics engineering, and quantum computing skills, the nation can scale both its research capacity and its industrial applications.

Economic growth, jobs, and national competitiveness

According to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, these announcements are a decisive step towards ensuring the UK is “the destination of choice for companies at the forefront of technological change”. The £11 billion rollout of AI infrastructure is expected to create thousands of new jobs, strengthen the UK’s sovereign digital capacity, and deliver new opportunities across multiple industries.

For the digital construction sector, this means increased investment in AI-driven innovation in the built environment, the ability to attract international capital, and the creation of new roles in data science, computational design, and AI engineering.

The UK at the heart of the AI industrial revolution

NVIDIA’s partnership with the UK marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s digital economy. By investing in AI infrastructure, quantum computing, and workforce development, the UK is building the foundation for long-term competitiveness, resilience, and sustainable growth.

As Jensen Huang noted: “We are at the big bang of intelligence.” With AI factories powered by NVIDIA, the UK is positioning itself as a global leader in the AI industrial revolution — where science, construction, industry, and society converge to drive innovation and build the economy of tomorrow.
