SymTerra, the UK-based construction communication and reporting platform, has secured £1.1 million in strategic funding to tackle one of the infrastructure sector’s most persistent challenges: poor communication and fragmented data. The investment, led by a group of leading industry and technology angels alongside innovation funding from Innovate UK, will fuel the expansion of SymTerra’s AI capabilities and accelerate its mission to connect on-site and office-based teams through real-time collaboration tools.
Construction’s $280bn productivity problem
The global construction industry loses an estimated $280 billion annually due to communication breakdowns, rework, and data inefficiencies. Despite advances in digital construction technologies, on-site communication remains one of the biggest barriers to productivity, safety, and project delivery. SymTerra aims to change that.
Developed by industry professionals who have experienced these challenges first-hand, SymTerra’s platform streamlines communication across project stakeholders, ensuring that field insights and updates flow seamlessly to management, clients, and partners. The tool is already used across more than £10 billion worth of live infrastructure and construction projects, from water networks and rail upgrades to transport operations.
“The industry thrives on collaboration, yet the way teams communicate is structured for failure,” said Sarah Crawley, Founder and CEO of SymTerra. “On-site teams have the most amount of knowledge, yet it’s largely untapped. We are solving one of the industry’s biggest productivity problems by making it easy for on-site and office-based teams to communicate and report in real time. This funding allows us to accelerate product development and scale across the sector.”
Strategic backing from industry leaders
The latest round is led by a group of strategic angel investors, including Fabienne Viala, former Chair and CEO of Bouygues UK, one of the UK’s most respected infrastructure leaders. The raise also includes backing from members of HERmesa and Enterprise 100 (E100), one of the UK’s longest-running private angel investment clubs, as well as innovation support from Innovate UK.
Viala commented: “SymTerra is addressing one of the most critical challenges facing infrastructure delivery, communication. The platform’s simplicity and understanding of life on site are exactly what the industry needs to drive lasting change. Sarah and her team combine real-world project experience with technology that scales, and I’m delighted to support their next stage of growth.”
As part of the investment, Viala will join SymTerra as its first Non-Executive Director, bringing decades of experience in large-scale infrastructure delivery to guide the company through its next phase of expansion.
Building the infrastructure for AI in construction
A core focus of the investment will be the development of SymAI, an intelligent analytics layer designed to convert field communication data into actionable insights. By harnessing the vast amount of unstructured information generated daily on construction sites, SymAI aims to enhance decision-making, risk management, and operational efficiency across the project lifecycle.
“We have built a profitable foundation and proven product-market fit in one of the hardest sectors to digitise,” Crawley added. “This raise gives us the firepower to scale responsibly while building the infrastructure AI actually needs to work in construction.”
The platform’s AI-driven communication workflows promise to unlock new value from existing data sources, reduce administrative burden, and enable more transparent reporting for clients and regulators alike.
Scaling a proven model across the built environment
Having achieved profitability from its pre-seed round, SymTerra has demonstrated strong adoption across Tier 1 contractors, utilities providers, and infrastructure operators. Its clients rely on the platform to simplify daily reporting, automate site updates, and create a single source of truth for project information, a key component of digital transformation in construction.
Recognised by Bloomberg as one of the UK’s Top 25 Startups, SymTerra is quickly emerging as a pivotal player in the digital construction technology ecosystem, sitting at the intersection of field communication, data intelligence, and infrastructure delivery.
Driving change across the sector
The company’s growth reflects a broader industry shift towards digital collaboration, construction productivity, and real-time data reporting. With governments and asset owners increasingly mandating digital recordkeeping and performance transparency, platforms like SymTerra are becoming critical enablers of next-generation project delivery.
The new funding will support key hires in AI development, product engineering, and customer success, ensuring that SymTerra continues to evolve in line with the complex needs of the built environment.
As the construction and infrastructure sectors grapple with the twin challenges of efficiency and sustainability, SymTerra’s mission to close the communication gap is gaining momentum, providing a model for how technology, backed by real-world insight, can reshape the way projects are delivered.
