Strengthening environmental and sustainability leadership

by Simon Foulds

Mott MacDonald has appointed Richard Woodward as Technical Director within its environmental and sustainability services team, underscoring the company’s ongoing commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure and environmental excellence across the UK.

With almost 20 years of experience in both the public and private sectors, Richard brings a wealth of expertise in environmental impact assessment (EIA), environmental risk management, sustainable design, and the delivery of major infrastructure projects. His career has focused on embedding sustainability and resilience into infrastructure from the earliest design stages.

Before joining Mott MacDonald, Richard spent 15 years at the Environment Agency, where he led the development of national flood infrastructure initiatives and helped shape policies that balance economic growth with long-term environmental protection. Most recently, he served as Environment Manager for the River Thames Scheme—the UK’s first flood resilience project to require a Development Consent Order (DCO)—where he provided strategic direction on all environmental elements of the project’s pre-application phase.

Environmental and sustainability professionals

Richard joins a nationwide team of over 130 environmental and sustainability professionals across 17 offices, delivering environmental planning and consultancy services for sectors including transport, energy, water, and infrastructure.

Commenting on his appointment, Richard said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Mott MacDonald at such a pivotal time for environmental consultancy. The scale and diversity of projects here offer a real opportunity to embed sustainability and resilience into infrastructure from the ground up.”

Julia Barrett, Global Practice Leader for Environment at Mott MacDonald, added: “Richard’s appointment strengthens our capability to help clients deliver environmentally led infrastructure projects. His leadership will further our mission to integrate sustainability, climate resilience, and environmental excellence into every stage of project delivery.”
