Advancing digital transformation

by Simon Foulds

Mott MacDonald has strengthened its long-term collaboration with Microsoft to accelerate digital transformation and AI enablement across its global operations. The company’s latest investment in Microsoft Azure AI Foundry represents a major step forward in its digital evolution, enhancing how data, cloud and artificial intelligence are used to deliver complex infrastructure projects.

This new phase builds on more than a decade of digitalisation at Mott MacDonald, during which the engineering, management and development consultancy has developed leading digital construction and AI-driven infrastructure solutions for clients worldwide. By embedding Azure AI capabilities at scale, the business is deepening its ability to deliver reliable, secure and data-led digital outcomes across every stage of project delivery.

Over the past 18 months, Mott MacDonald has empowered more than 3,000 ‘citizen developers’ through its digital workspaces platform, a collaborative and secure environment designed to accelerate innovation. With the scalability and flexibility of Microsoft Azure, teams can access advanced computing power and deploy AI-enabled tools more efficiently, supporting faster project delivery and improved client outcomes. This approach is helping to transform how digital construction teams develop and apply technology within a robust governance framework.

These capabilities are already shaping real-world applications. Mott MacDonald’s AI-enhanced consent management solution is enabling faster and more accurate public consultations on major infrastructure schemes. Meanwhile, a chat-powered upgrade to the company’s Carbon Portal has made low-carbon design optimisation more accessible, supporting the construction sector’s transition to net zero.

The investment in Azure AI also builds on Mott MacDonald’s responsible AI policy, introduced in 2024 to ensure safe, transparent and ethical use of artificial intelligence. Supported by this framework, the company continues to develop modern digital applications through its workspaces platform, fostering the responsible and effective democratisation of AI in construction.

David Johnson, group development director at Mott MacDonald, commented: “The world’s most complex infrastructure projects require highly technical and digitally enabled solutions. Our clients need these to be reliable, scalable and absolutely secure. By deepening our long-term collaboration with Microsoft we are taking the next step to enable the democratisation of AI across our business, delivering better outcomes for our clients and the communities they serve.”

As the construction and infrastructure sectors continue to embrace digital transformation, Mott MacDonald’s integration of Microsoft Azure AI Foundry marks a defining moment. The partnership reinforces the company’s commitment to innovation, scalability and responsible AI adoption, setting a benchmark for how digital construction and AI technologies can enhance performance, sustainability and client value across the built environment.
