Partnership to accelerate sustainable construction

by Simon Foulds

A new strategic partnership between the Alliance for Sustainable Building Products (ASBP) and Built Environment,  Smarter Transformation (BE-ST) aims to increase the UK’s use of sustainable building products and support the shift towards low-carbon construction. The agreement brings together two organisations with shared ambitions for transforming the built environment through evidence-based practice, collaborative research and improved industry capability.

The partnership will combine the strengths, networks and technical expertise of both organisations to advance the adoption of low-carbon, natural materials in construction. This includes supporting the wider use of natural materials in retrofit programmes and new-build schemes, promoting timber-rich construction in the UK, and encouraging greater market confidence in homegrown timber products.

A further area of focus will involve expanding the market for proven sustainable building products, including natural fibre insulation championed through the ASBP Natural Fibre Insulation Group. Both organisations will also work together to strengthen the UK’s low-carbon skills base, with an emphasis on work quality, whole-life carbon assessment and the knowledge required to deliver sustainable construction at scale.

Accelerating progress

Richard Broad, Director at ASBP, said the partnership will help accelerate progress across the sector: “By aligning our networks, knowledge and expertise on timber and natural materials, we can strengthen the case for sustainable products and support the sector to embed low-carbon solutions at scale.”

Louise Rogers, Impact Manager at BE-ST, highlighted the potential for sector-wide impact: “By working in partnership with ASBP, we can expand our reach and bring together our expertise in MMC, timber engineering and skills delivery to help shape policies and markets that make low-carbon construction the industry standard.”

Through this strategic partnership, ASBP and BE-ST will explore programme development, knowledge exchange and new collaboration opportunities with industry, government and research partners. Together, they aim to accelerate the transition to a sustainable, digitally enabled and low-carbon construction sector in the UK.
