Hostile cyber activity in the UK continues to escalate, placing sustained pressure on small businesses operating in the digital construction sector. In response to recent incidents, the government has issued an open letter to industry trade bodies and business representative organisations, outlining practical steps that support firms in strengthening cyber resilience. As digital adoption increases across construction, reliable cybersecurity measures have become central to business continuity, supply chain assurance and project delivery.
Cyber Action Tool
The letter highlights two primary actions that small business owners can take to reduce exposure to cyber threats. The first is the use of the new Cyber Action Toolkit, a free and personalised resource developed by the National Cyber Security Centre. The toolkit provides structured guidance that supports organisations in assessing their current protections and identifying clear steps to reinforce cyber security across digital systems, workflows and connected technologies commonly used in construction.
Cyber Essentials
The second recommendation is the adoption of Cyber Essentials, the government-backed scheme designed to mitigate common attacks. Certification offers access to cyber insurance and a 24/7 emergency helpline, while also supporting eligibility for government contracts and improving organisational assurance across project teams. Data from the scheme indicates that certified organisations are significantly less likely to make a cyber insurance claim.
Take action
If an incident occurs, businesses can report fraud and cybercrime to Action Fraud or via 101 in Scotland, ensuring access to timely support. By sharing this guidance across industry networks, the government aims to help small businesses in the digital construction sector embed more robust cybersecurity practices and maintain operational resilience in an increasingly challenging threat landscape
