Upgrading a major transport corridor in Oman

by Simon Foulds

STRABAG Oman LLC has secured a contract worth approximately €102 million to upgrade the 18th of November Street and Al Mouj Street in Muscat. The programme represents a significant digital construction initiative for Oman’s transport infrastructure and forms part of a wider strategy to improve connectivity across the capital. For the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, the scheme is central to enhancing mobility on one of Muscat’s busiest corridors linking Muscat International Airport, the Sultan Qaboos Highway and the Muscat Expressway.

The 8.7-kilometre project will widen 18th of November Street to three lanes, introduce new flyovers and underpasses, and convert several roundabouts into signalised intersections. These upgrades are designed to reduce congestion, streamline traffic flows and strengthen transport links across the city. STRABAG Oman, acting as general contractor, will oversee construction and part of the planning process, integrating methods such as lean scheduling and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to support efficiency, coordination and delivery.

Constrained urban environments

Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and will run for 30 months. Work will take place while traffic remains in operation, supported by temporary diversions to maintain access throughout the programme. This approach reflects the contractor’s experience in delivering complex infrastructure projects within constrained urban environments.

Siegfried Wanker, Member of the Executive Board of STRABAG SE for the International + Special Divisions segment, noted that the expansion will contribute to improved mobility in Muscat and reinforces STRABAG’s long-term role in the region. He highlighted the application of digital construction processes, including BIM, as a core element of the company’s delivery strategy.

The project underlines the growing importance of digital construction in Oman’s transport sector. By combining infrastructure upgrades with data-driven planning and execution, STRABAG is supporting a more resilient and connected network for the capital.
