Critical phase of Wrocław Airport modernisation completed

by Simon Foulds

The modernisation of Wrocław Airport has reached a significant stage, with STRABAG successfully completing a 40-day operational shutdown designed to connect new taxiways and install upgraded systems. The closure formed part of an €89 million airport modernisation and expansion programme aimed at doubling passenger capacity by the end of 2026. As one of Poland’s most substantial airport infrastructure upgrades, the project highlights the increasing role of digital construction technologies and integrated delivery models across the aviation sector.

The temporary shutdown enabled the safe integration of four new taxiways with the existing runway, forming a core structural element in the airport’s future operational layout. STRABAG also commissioned a new airfield lighting system during the closure window, completing all tasks within the planned schedule. The delivery reflects the company’s established expertise in large-scale mobility infrastructure projects in Poland, particularly where time-critical works are required within active aviation environments.

The shutdown followed extensive preparatory works delivered during ongoing airport operations. Prior to closure, STRABAG constructed the new PPS-3 apron for twelve aircraft and developed several taxiways without disrupting flight schedules. This approach demonstrates the value of phased construction, robust logistics planning and digital project coordination on projects with constrained operational parameters. The next phase will focus on completing and modernising the remaining taxiways to support future traffic volumes.

Digitally enabled transport infrastructure

Co-financed through the European Union’s CEF2 programme, the modernisation spans more than 35 hectares and reflects broader European investment trends in sustainable, resilient and digitally enabled transport infrastructure. The scope includes more than five kilometres of taxiways, each with a width of 44 metres, alongside the installation of 240,000 m² of asphalt and 110,000 m² of concrete. STRABAG is also delivering water and wastewater systems, telecommunications infrastructure, upgraded power supply networks, navigation systems and advanced airfield lighting. The integration of these elements aligns with increasing demand for digital construction technologies in airport infrastructure, supporting improved asset visibility, lifecycle performance and operational safety.

To maintain quality control and track continuous progress, STRABAG is deploying modern digital tools, reinforcing the importance of data-driven workflows in complex aviation infrastructure projects. Despite the scale of construction, the airport remains largely operational for the duration of the 26-month programme. Passenger numbers continue to grow, with 4.5 million travellers recorded by October 2025, exceeding the previous year’s total of four million. The expansion is therefore critical in meeting rising demand and aligning the airport with future European mobility requirements.

According to Péter Glöckler, Member of the Management Board of STRABAG SE for the South + East segment, delivering complex works during airport operations requires precise planning and a high level of technical capability. He emphasised that the company’s experience in mobility infrastructure allows it to support Poland’s evolving transport landscape and strengthen its position in a competitive market.

The Wrocław Airport project marks a key step in Poland’s aviation development strategy and demonstrates how coordinated delivery, digital tools and cross-disciplinary engineering can support long-term airport growth. As the next phases progress, the project will continue to serve as a reference point for European-funded aviation infrastructure upgrades and for the broader digital construction sector.
