£210m Sheffield Forgemasters Machine Shop contract

by Simon Foulds

Sheffield Forgemasters has awarded McLaughlin & Harvey the £210 million main works contract for its new Machine Shop, marking a significant milestone in the company’s recapitalisation programme. The project represents one of the most substantial investments in advanced manufacturing construction currently underway in the UK, with direct implications for digital construction delivery, defence infrastructure, and Industry 4.0 integration.

The Machine Shop will be developed on a 16-acre brownfield site at Weedon Street, adjacent to Sheffield Forgemasters’ existing Brightside Lane facilities. The 30,000 m² industrial building is designed to house 24 new machines, including some of the world’s largest Vertical Turning Lathes. The scale and technical requirements of the facility demand a highly coordinated digital construction approach, combining complex ground engineering, structural design, and precision machine installation.

McLaughlin & Harvey has already completed enabling works and progressed into advanced works ahead of the main contract award. These works include piling for the building superstructure, machine base foundations, and the installation of site-wide drainage and storm-water attenuation tanks. More than 4,000 piles have been installed, alongside extensive civils works such as capping beams, pile caps, and integrated underground services. This early progress enables structural steelwork erection to commence in January 2026, maintaining programme certainty on a nationally significant project.

Wider investment strategy

According to Craig Fisher, Programme Director for Recapitalisation at Sheffield Forgemasters, the Machine Shop forms a central element of the wider investment strategy. The facility will support the creation of one of Europe’s most advanced defence machining centres, complementing construction of the UK’s largest open-die forging line currently underway at the North Brightside Lane site. Together, these projects represent a step change in UK sovereign manufacturing capability.

From a digital construction perspective, the project highlights the growing importance of early contractor involvement, data-led planning, and integrated delivery across large-scale industrial developments. The project team includes Arup, responsible for ecological and travel assessments, Bond Bryan Architects as lead designer, and JLL, which supported site acquisition and planning submissions. Coordination between these disciplines underpins efficient sequencing, risk management, and compliance on a constrained brownfield site.

Paul Griffen, Managing Director at McLaughlin & Harvey, emphasised the project’s wider impact, noting its role in supporting UK industry and the South Yorkshire economy. The contract reinforces the contractor’s position within the advanced manufacturing and defence construction sectors, where technical complexity and long-term asset performance are critical.

Beyond the physical infrastructure, Sheffield Forgemasters’ 13,000-tonne forging line and Machine Shop will support a new generation of engineers trained in Industry 4.0 technologies, digital manufacturing systems, and data-driven production environments.
