Built Environment Competence Hub launched

by Simon Foulds

BSI has launched a national digital hub to align competence standards across the UK built environment.

The Built Environment Competence Hub is a new national digital platform developed to support competence management across the built environment and digital construction sector. Launched by BSI, the Hub brings together standards, competence frameworks, guidance and trusted industry insight in one accessible location. Its purpose is to help professionals and organisations navigate complex regulatory, technical and professional requirements with greater clarity.

Managed by BSI and developed in collaboration with the Industry Competence Steering Group (ICSG) and the Building Safety Regulator (BSR), the Hub responds directly to long-standing industry concerns. Competence information has often been fragmented across disciplines, roles and organisations, creating inconsistency and uncertainty across the built environment lifecycle.

Supporting regulatory reform and consistency

The Hub provides a shared reference point to support alignment with regulatory reform, including the Building Safety Act 2022. By centralising authoritative competence-related resources, it supports improved understanding of roles, responsibilities and expectations across design, construction, operation and maintenance.

Anthony Burd, Director of Built Environment, BSI Knowledge Solutions, said: “Competence is fundamental to a built environment sector that is safe, trusted and capable of meeting society’s needs. The Built Environment Competence Hub has been designed as a living resource, shaped by ongoing industry input and able to evolve as competence requirements, standards and best practice continue to develop.”

He added that improved access to trusted information will “play a vital role in helping the sector respond to regulatory reform following the introduction of the Building Safety Act 2022.”

Open access for the built environment sector

The Built Environment Competence Hub is open to professionals, organisations and stakeholders across the sector. Users are encouraged to register to access resources, engage with guidance and stay informed as the digital hub develops.

By centralising trusted competence information, the Hub supports regulatory compliance, professional consistency and safer outcomes, strengthening digital construction practices across the UK built environment sector nationally today.
