Robots drill at data centre construction

by Simon Foulds

Global data centre construction demands faster, safer drilling as automation transforms digital infrastructure delivery worldwide.

DEWALT®, a Stanley Black & Decker brand, has introduced the world’s first downward drilling, fleet-capable robot developed with August Robotics to support large-scale data centre construction projects. The innovation responds to accelerating global investment in digital infrastructure, with more than 400 data centres currently under development to meet demand for AI computing capacity.

The autonomous robotic solution, powered by August Robotics’ fleet orchestration and drilling platform, delivers concrete drilling speeds up to ten times faster than conventional manual methods. During an ongoing pilot programme with a leading hyperscaler, the robot has already supported ten phases of construction, cutting delivery schedules by a combined 80 weeks.

Across more than 90,000 drilled holes, the system achieved 99.97% positional and depth accuracy, ensuring precision installation of structural components supporting mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems within hyperscale facilities.

Robotic concrete drilling improves productivity and safety

The fleet-capable configuration allows multiple robots to operate across expansive construction floors, increasing drilling capacity while reducing labour exposure to repetitive and high-vibration tasks. Contractors benefit from lower cost per hole, predictable drilling performance, and consistent quality control across complex data centre builds.

Bill Beck, President of Tools & Outdoor at Stanley Black & Decker, emphasised the strategic importance of construction speed for hyperscale operators.

“Across the globe, hyperscalers, which account for nearly 80% of overall data centre demand are investing in infrastructure to power AI computing, with an estimated industry-wide capital expenditure of $7 trillion in data centres by 2030,” Beck said. “Our customers consistently emphasise that speed of construction is critical. The robotic drilling solution meets this need head-on through schedule acceleration, cost savings, near-perfect accuracy and enhanced jobsite safety. DEWALT’s relentless pursuit of innovation to drive productivity is redefining how the world builds.”

Integrated digital construction ecosystem

The robotic drilling platform complements DEWALT’s existing digital construction ecosystem, including PERFORM AND PROTECT™ technologies designed to manage vibration, dust and tool control on construction sites, alongside its ICC-approved anchoring systems.

Automated downward drilling directly supports installation processes required for server rack stops and structural supports, which remain critical stages in hyperscale facility delivery. By automating these workflows, contractors can maintain schedules despite labour constraints and rising global data centre demand.

Commercial deployment of the robotic drilling system is expected in mid-2026, positioning automation as a central component of future digital construction strategies.

Robotic drilling, fleet orchestration, and integrated construction technologies position contractors to meet accelerating global data centre demand while improving safety, accuracy, and project delivery outcomes worldwide consistently.
