Highways and transportation contract extended

by Simon Foulds

WSP has secured a four-year extension with Leeds City Council for transport infrastructure services.

WSP has confirmed a four-year contract extension with Leeds City Council, reinforcing a partnership focused on highways and transportation infrastructure delivery, digital engineering integration, and long-term urban mobility planning.

The renewed agreement builds on over two decades of collaboration, supporting Leeds’ highways, transport systems, and place-based infrastructure strategy. Since 2003, the partnership has delivered complex infrastructure programmes, combining engineering consultancy with digital construction methodologies and data-led asset management.

This extension ensures continuity in delivering critical services, including transport policy development, traffic management systems, UTMC signal optimisation, highways maintenance, and civil engineering design. It also strengthens capabilities in geotechnical engineering, flood risk management, and smart infrastructure planning, key components of modern digital construction ecosystems.

Supporting smart transport and infrastructure delivery

The partnership has delivered several high-profile schemes, including the Regent Street Flyover replacement, public realm improvements at the Corn Exchange, and enhancements to the Stourton Park and Ride facility. These projects demonstrate integrated delivery across digital design, infrastructure resilience, and urban mobility.

In addition to capital projects, the collaboration supports statutory functions such as bridge inspections and embedded technical secondments, enabling knowledge transfer and operational continuity within council teams.

Enabling the Connecting Leeds Transport Strategy

Future work will align with the Connecting Leeds Transport Strategy, focusing on delivering safe, efficient, and resilient transport networks. The programme emphasises digital transport planning, sustainable mobility solutions, and infrastructure performance optimisation to support economic growth and connectivity.

Nav Gahonia, Director at WSP, stated: “We’re proud to continue our long-standing partnership with Leeds City Council. This extension reflects our shared commitment to delivering high-quality infrastructure that supports the city’s ambitions and serves communities across Leeds. We look forward to continuing to provide technical expertise, capacity and collaborative support as the Council progresses its transport priorities.”

This contract extension positions WSP and Leeds City Council to advance digital construction practices, strengthen transport resilience, and deliver integrated infrastructure aligned with long-term urban development and mobility objectives.
