UK Microreactor development through strategic agreement

by Simon Foulds

Mott MacDonald and Cambridge Atomworks formalise collaboration to advance UK microreactor technology and delivery.

Mott MacDonald has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Cambridge Atomworks to accelerate the development of advanced microreactor technology. The agreement focuses on strengthening the UK’s capability in advanced nuclear energy systems, supporting clean energy transition goals, and enhancing export competitiveness in nuclear engineering.

Cambridge Atomworks is among a limited number of UK organisations developing a UK-designed microreactor, positioning the technology as a key component of the future low carbon energy mix. The collaboration introduces specialist expertise in nuclear safety and licensing, systems integration, and digital engineering and visualisation in nuclear projects, ensuring alignment with regulatory and delivery requirements.

Digital engineering and nuclear project delivery expertise

Mott MacDonald will contribute its global experience in nuclear project delivery and engineering consultancy services, supported by a network of more than 1,000 specialists. Its role includes providing technical advisory across complex nuclear infrastructure projects, integrating digital methodologies to improve design, safety, and deployment efficiency.

Cambridge Atomworks, with established links to the University of Cambridge and UK research institutions, is developing the ODIN microreactor. This compact system is designed for off-grid power generation and remote energy infrastructure applications, addressing energy access challenges in hard-to-reach locations.

Ian Baird, nuclear general manager at Mott MacDonald, said: “We are excited to be supporting Cambridge Atomworks in the early development of British microreactor technology. The combination of its innovative reactor IP with our global engineering expertise, nuclear innovation and technical leadership in the sector will help advance the next generation of low carbon nuclear solutions.”

Ian Farnan, CEO of Cambridge Atomworks, said: “The signing of this MoU with a top British engineering consultancy will allow us to accelerate the development of our British-designed Odin nuclear microreactor. Mott MacDonald’s global experience and technical excellence in delivering nuclear projects will be invaluable to us as we plan the deployment of Odin as an off-grid generator in diverse remote locations.”

This agreement reflects growing investment in UK microreactor technology, supporting digital construction innovation, nuclear project delivery capability, and scalable low carbon energy infrastructure deployment worldwide.
