Sustainability expertise is a powerful ally for growth

Neil Davidson, group vice president of Deltek, shares his thoughts on how sustainability expertise is powering growth for architecture and engineering firms

For architecture and engineering firms, sustainability is no longer a trend, but the next great design challenge. With net-zero targets accelerating and clients demanding greener solutions, firms that can combine environmental innovation with commercial outcomes are pulling ahead.

Climate targets demand net-zero buildings by 2050, regulations are tightening rapidly, and clients increasingly prioritise environmental performance alongside technical excellence. Apple’s campus in California, for instance, stands as a benchmark for net-zero energy buildings, with its extensive sustainability features – such as natural ventilation, on-site solar generation, and recycled materials – demonstrating ambition, innovation and commercial value from the architects.

The firm didn’t view environmental requirements as constraints that limit creativity or drain budgets. Instead, they grasped that sustainability expertise is a powerful commercial and creative catalyst. Other early adopters have benefitted from more profitable and resilient retainers, helping to future-proof practices.

They’ve mastered four critical elements that turn environmental ambition into a competitive advantage. This includes understanding the compelling business case for ESG investment, leveraging environmental expertise as a service differentiator, harnessing technology to deliver tangible outcomes, and embedding sustainability into their long-term strategic vision.

Why sustainability is now a business imperative

The financial reality of sustainability is enticing. Green buildings consistently deliver operational cost savings, reducing operating expenses by up to 19% while increasing asset values through higher occupancy rates and premium pricing. For architecture and engineering firms, this translates into clients who are not only willing to pay for sustainability expertise, but actively seeking it out.

Our own research found that 92% of infrastructure investors now consider ESG performance instrumental to achieving long-term value creation strategies. This complements the growing demand from clients and regulators, all of whom are increasingly making decisions based on environmental performance metrics. The result is a market in which sustainability expertise directly correlates with business success.

The economic case isn’t just limited to individual projects. Firms with strong environmental credentials gain access to government incentives, green financing options, and exclusive opportunities in the rapidly expanding sustainable infrastructure market.

They attract top talent motivated by purpose alongside profit, creating teams with the specialised skills essential for future market leadership. Most importantly, they build client relationships that transcend individual projects, creating ongoing partnerships that generate recurring revenue streams.

ESG as an expertise differentiator

Leading firms have stopped viewing sustainability as something that simply happens to their projects and started treating it as something they actively shape. They’re developing specialised services around emissions tracking, energy benchmarking, structural optimisation, and carbon assessment that create genuine recurring revenue streams, while positioning themselves as indispensable partners in their clients’ environmental stewardship journeys.

This approach creates multiple competitive advantages. Deep environmental expertise that’s difficult to replicate, proprietary methodologies that deliver superior outcomes, and client relationships built on ongoing value creation rather than project completion.

Technology is the true enabler of this shift, and it will only serve as a stronger foundation for future projects. With 82% of firms planning increased investment in emerging technologies in 2025, the timing could not be more ideal for integrating environmental performance into core digital workflows.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) remains the cornerstone of this transformation. Modern BIM platforms allow designers and engineers to accurately predict a structure’s environmental impact long before construction begins.

By creating comprehensive digital twins that simulate energy usage, carbon emissions, and structural efficiency, firms can help clients make more informed decisions that balance environmental ambitions with practical constraints. Sustainability moves from guesswork to precise engineering.

Artificial intelligence technologies are accelerating this precision further. The 54% of firms already using AI for automating tasks and project modelling are evaluating multiple design scenarios, optimising structural systems for material efficiency, and in doing so, ultimately democratising high-level environmental analysis. AI is an incredible leveller and makes sophisticated sustainability assessments accessible to firms of all sizes.

This is most powerful when these tools are not siloed, but interoperable. Comprehensive project management platforms complete the picture by integrating sustainability metrics throughout the project lifecycle.

These systems enable firms to project and store environmental performance indicators alongside traditional metrics, creating detailed sustainability reports that demonstrate measurable outcomes to clients. Through maintaining centralised databases of sustainable materials, energy calculations, and carbon assessments, firms can use past project data to continuously refine their environmental strategies and build compelling case studies for prospective clients.

Leadership and long-term strategy

The transition from ‘sustainability challenge’ to ‘competitive differentiator’ requires more than a mindset shift – it demands systematic integration of environmental considerations into core business strategy.

Successful firms are investing in upskilling their teams with green expertise while developing internal capabilities that position them as thought leaders in sustainable design and construction. They’re building partnerships with environmental consultants, technology providers, and academic institutions that enhance their expertise while creating new business opportunities.

While many firms continue to view sustainability as a challenge to be managed, forward-thinking practices are discovering it represents the greatest growth opportunity in a generation. The opportunity is not only moral, but also profoundly commercial. In an industry where differentiation is increasingly difficult to achieve, sustainability expertise offers a pathway to premium positioning, recurring revenue, and unshakeable competitive advantage.

The question now facing every practice isn’t whether this transformation will happen, but whether they’ll lead it.
