The North East is emerging as a centre for green innovation, with Newcastle-based Tribe Solutions advancing the UK’s net-zero goals. After success in Newcastle University’s Foundership programme, the consultancy plans to expand its decarbonisation planning approach.
Driving building decarbonisation with innovative technology
Tribe Solutions has developed an online tool designed to fast-track decarbonisation planning in buildings by evaluating energy performance and identifying cost-effective pathways to net zero. This innovation aligns with the UK’s growing focus on heat decarbonisation and energy efficiency solutions.
Founded by Richard Airey, a Newcastle University MBA graduate, and Sean Jobling, a Clean Technology graduate, the company combines technical expertise with strategic insight to help public and private sector organisations achieve sustainable energy transitions.
Richard Airey said: “Over the last six months, we’ve been on an exciting period of discovery. The Founderships programme has helped us refine our business model, clarify our product vision, and accelerate the development of what Tribe Solutions can offer. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved in such a short time and excited about what’s next.”
Expanding services and net-zero solutions
Tribe Solutions has already helped clients secure over £4 million in grant funding, supporting robust business cases and delivering ‘no regret’ energy-saving measures. The company has recently launched GO as a Service (GO-aaS) – a fully funded, net-zero solution designed to simplify decarbonisation strategies for businesses and local authorities.
Sean Jobling added: “We’re looking forward to continued collaboration with the university beyond START UP, including opportunities to innovate across our growing portfolio. Our plans include the launch of a Utility Bureau and expanding our reach through GO-aaS.”
Backed by Newcastle University’s entrepreneurial ecosystem
The Founderships programme provides high-potential graduate entrepreneurs with funding, mentorship, and access to a vibrant innovation network. Tribe’s selection was supported by Simon Green and Alan Holmes from Edge Innovation, alongside Mark Turner, Head of Research Software Engineering at Newcastle University.
Claire Adamson, Senior Manager for Entrepreneurship and START UP at Newcastle University, commented: “Tribe’s work is a fantastic example of how our graduates are tackling real-world challenges with scalable solutions. Their commitment to driving sustainable change is truly inspiring.”
Peter Roberts, Founder and Director of Pure Gym, added: “Tribe Solutions exemplifies the innovation and impact we strive to foster. Its journey is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when ambition meets the right support.”
North East: a growing hub for green innovation
Since 2014, Newcastle University’s Founderships programme has supported 36 businesses, generating over £127 million in turnover and creating more than 641 jobs. Tribe joins a notable line-up of entrepreneurial success stories such as Equiwatt, One Utility Bill, and Donzoko Brewing Company.
With over 230 active START UP-supported businesses, the North East is fast becoming a leader in sustainable business growth. These businesses collectively boast a combined annual turnover of £155 million and have raised over £122 million in investment, reinforcing the region’s role as a driving force in the UK’s green economy.
