Equipping  IT mentors with autism reality experience

by BiD Admin

Platform Housing Group has reinforced its commitment to neurodiversity and inclusion by hosting an Autism Reality Experience training day at its Solihull headquarters. The immersive session was designed to prepare IT managers and mentors for welcoming neurodivergent apprentices to the organisation’s Digital Futures Academy.

The Academy – launched in November 2024 – offers a unique route into digital and data technology apprenticeships for individuals who may have faced barriers to traditional education, particularly those who are autistic or otherwise neurodiverse. With a strong focus on improving customer experience within the social housing sector, the programme aims to open doors to careers for talent often underrepresented in tech.

The training involved a powerful simulation replicating the sensory and cognitive challenges faced by autistic people, paired with an in-depth presentation to spark discussion on creating more inclusive working environments.

Transformative

Roman Krasniuk, one of the IT mentors set to support incoming apprentices, described the experience as “transformative,” adding that it deepened his emotional understanding and will shape how he approaches communication, accessibility, and inclusion.

The initiative forms part of Platform’s broader strategy to ensure mentors are not just technically skilled but also equipped to support apprentices with neurodivergent needs. The Digital Futures Academy, serving Worcester and the wider West Midlands, is central to the organisation’s drive for inclusive talent development and accessible pathways into digital careers.

Jon Cocker, Chief Information Officer at Platform Housing Group, said: “Digital inclusion starts with people. By investing in immersive training, we’re setting a standard for empathy, understanding, and accessibility across our teams. Supporting neurodivergent talent strengthens the future of our organisation.”

Platform Housing Group plans to roll out the Autism Reality Experience to customer-facing departments, embedding inclusive service and communication as standard practice across the business.
