ICE launches first ‘Resilient Transport’ conference – paper submissions now open

by BiD Admin

From 23–25 September 2026, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) will host its inaugural Resilient Transport Conference in Manchester – a new flagship event dedicated to the future of climate-resilient transport infrastructure.

The three-day conference at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate will unite civil and infrastructure engineers, asset owners, policymakers, and academics to tackle one of the sector’s most pressing challenges: keeping transport networks running in an era of climate change, ageing assets, and tight budgets.

Call for papers now open

The ICE is now inviting abstract submissions from professionals worldwide who can share best practice, research, and real-world case studies on delivering resilient transport networks. Submissions are open to both members and non-members, with a deadline of 30 September 2025. Each abstract must be no longer than 300 words and should nominate one presenting author.

Abstracts will be reviewed in October and November 2025, with feedback issued by December. More information and the online submission form can be found on the ICE website.

Why resilient transport matters

Two recent ICE reports – Building Safeguards and State of the Nation 2025 – underline the urgent need for a joined-up approach to transport resilience planning. With extreme weather events increasing and infrastructure lifespans under strain, knowledge sharing is critical to keeping passengers, freight, and economies moving.

Conference chair Isabel Coman, director of engineering and asset strategy at Transport for London, said: “Building resilient transport infrastructure is no longer optional – it’s essential. Resilient Transport 2026 will give professionals the tools and knowledge to safeguard the UK’s transport network for future generations.”

What to expect in 2026

The programme – due for release in summer 2026 – will feature keynote addresses, technical sessions, interactive workshops, technical site visits, networking opportunities, and a gala dinner on 24 September. Core themes will include:

  • Building resilience across asset lifecycles
  • Adapting ageing infrastructure while balancing costs and risks
  • Harnessing digital engineering and data for smarter renewals
  • Reducing carbon and waste in transport projects
  • Applying a systems approach to infrastructure delivery
  • Designing adaptable transport assets for changing mobility needs

Delegate registration opens later in 2025.
