Aligning construction sustainability with UN SDGs

by Simon Foulds

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has published a report offering practical guidance for advancing sustainability in the built environment sector. It encourages construction professionals to align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for meaningful industry and societal impact.

A legacy of leadership and sustainability

The report was launched to commemorate the end of Professor Mike Kagioglou MCIOB’s presidential term at CIOB.

Developed through a series of insightful roundtables with senior figures from construction, infrastructure, consultancy, and academia, the report offers industry-led case studies that make it a go-to resource for professionals at every stage of their sustainability journey.

Professor Kagioglou emphasised the urgency of the mission: “As this report and many others have demonstrated, it is simply not enough to continue at our current pace. The UN SDGs offer a useful framework for addressing our approach in a holistic way. Perfectly aligned to CIOB’s strategy around modern professionalism, quality, skills, and sustainability, it presents an opportunity for all of us to engage with renewed energy and deliver greater benefits for us all.”

Driving innovation and leadership through sustainability

More than just a guide to regulatory compliance, the report illustrates how embedding the UN Sustainable Development Goals in construction practices can unlock innovation, boost collaboration, and showcase industry leadership. Whether a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) or a large Tier 1 contractor, firms across the sector can contribute meaningfully to the 17 SDGs.

Key areas covered include:

  • Climate action and carbon reduction
  • Nature and biodiversity protection
  • Health and well-being
  • Education and employment
  • Equality and social impact

The report makes clear that sustainability in construction is no longer a niche concern—it is a core business strategy that enhances competitiveness, attracts talent, and builds resilient communities.

A resource to accelerate sustainable progress

Amanda Williams, CIOB’s Head of Environmental Sustainability and co-author of the report, shared her perspective: “By working with this group of senior construction leaders, we have been able to gather valuable insights and case studies showing how built environment companies are engaging with the SDGs. The report not only captures these insights but will also guide future CIOB initiatives to help our members become more sustainable and innovative. Time is running out to deliver on these goals, so we must accelerate action now.”

Shaping a sustainable future for the built environment

The CIOB report is more than a publication—it’s a call to action. It provides practical guidance for professionals, businesses, and industry leaders who want to align their work with global sustainability standards while driving positive change within their organizations and communities.

By embracing the UN SDGs in construction, companies can elevate their impact, lead with purpose, and build a brighter, more sustainable future.
