Automate environmental product declaration

by Simon Foulds

Holcim’s expanded EPD automation with Climate Earth signals faster, compliant environmental data delivery across Europe markets.

Holcim has signed a commercial agreement with Climate Earth to expand Environmental Product Declaration automation across its European operations. The collaboration reduces the time required to produce third-party verified EPDs from weeks to minutes, supporting the digital transformation of construction product data management. The agreement builds on the deployment of Climate Earth’s automated EPD generator at nearly 200 Holcim cement and ready-mix plants across 14 countries within three years.

The role of EPDs in regulatory compliance and sustainable construction

Environmental Product Declarations are independently verified documents that communicate environmental impact indicators, including carbon footprint, energy use and waste generation. For construction industry specifiers, EPDs provide transparent, comparable data on sustainable construction materials. This supports compliance with EU regulations, market adoption of lower-impact products, and alignment with green building certification requirements across Europe.

Preparing for Digital Product Passports and future regulation

Ram Muthu, Head of Operational Excellence at Holcim, said: “Our groundbreaking collaboration with Climate Earth will enable Holcim to provide verified environmental data for all our European ready-mix and cement products. It will enable us to meet EU regulatory requirements ahead of the introduction of Digital Product Passports for cement from 2028, and help our customers to differentiate their use of Holcim’s sustainable offering.”

Real-time environmental data for cement and ready-mix products

By integrating automated EPD technology, Holcim is shifting to real-time environmental data reporting. This approach allows the company to respond efficiently to market demand, regulatory expectations and customer requirements for third-party verified environmental data. Automation also supports transparency for products such as ECOPact and ECOPlanet, enabling informed specification decisions.

By scaling automated EPD generation, Holcim strengthens digital construction transparency, supports regulatory readiness, and enables specifiers to select verified low-impact cement and ready-mix solutions with confidence Europe-wide.
