Build in Digital, the news platform and collaborative community for digital construction professionals, launched its first social event last week (31 March).
Around 20 construction professionals attended the online event, the theme of which was ‘Weaving the Golden Thread into construction safety practices’.
The event kicked off with a roundtable of 60-second introductions before moving on to the two keynote presentations.
Keynote: Sam stacey, Innovate UK
The first keynote was delivered by Sam Stacey, Innovate UK‘s Transforming Construction Challenge director.
Sam’s keynote used the example of the UK government’s Transforming Construction Challenge as a springboard to explore how we can create a more sustainable and efficient construction industry.
Speaking on the topic, Sam said: “Firstly, we need more integration between all the different players in the construction sector, from architects and engineers to clients and subcontractors.
“Secondly, we need to share information across the industry more readily, which will help accelerate investment in innovation and digital solutions.”
Keynote: Robert Norton, PlanRadar
Sam’s presentation set the scene for the next keynote from Robert Norton, UK senior account manager (Fire, Health & Safety) at PlanRadar.
Robert honed in on the role of digital technology in enabling the Golden Thread of information, to increase building safety from design to demolition.
Robert showcased Planradar’s innovative digital platform which equips contractors, developers, and asset managers with a transparent, accurate, and secure ‘single source of truth’.
After the final keynote, attendees took part in a networking session where they carried on the conversation about the Golden Thread.
Overall, the social encapsulated many of the challenges that face the construction industry today and how digital innovations can help build a better, more resilient sector.
The main takeaway from the social was that the Golden Thread must be weaved into the very fabric of the industry in order to streamline the use and handover of critical information about the built environment.
Build in Digital Socials are monthly online events that are free to attend for BD members and building professionals.
Held remotely, the socials offer attendees from the UK and beyond the opportunity to glean insights from expert speakers and network with other digital construction professionals.
