Natural Power has secured a contract to carry out ground investigation works on the onshore section of the Eastern Green Link 5 (EGL5) high voltage direct current cable route.
The contract, awarded under Natural Power’s engineering framework agreement with SSEN Transmission, marks the first call-off under a new ground investigation framework between the two companies.
EGL5 will carry up to 2GW of clean energy between Aberdeenshire and Lincolnshire – enough to power two million homes – as part of the wider expansion of the UK’s electricity transmission network to connect and transfer renewable energy.
Under the contract, Natural Power will undertake ground investigation works along the proposed onshore cable route, gathering geotechnical and geoenvironmental data to inform the design and development of the project. Planning and preparation works are already under way, with physical works beginning at the end of August.
Ralph Spernagel, construction director at Natural Power, said: “Ground investigations are a vital stage in the development of major infrastructure projects, providing the information needed to make informed engineering decisions and reduce project risk.
“This contract reflects the confidence our clients place in our technical capability, project management expertise and commitment to delivering high-quality site investigations safely and efficiently. We look forward to working closely with SSEN Transmission to help progress this nationally significant project and support the UK’s transition to a secure, low-carbon electricity network.”
