The chief executive of Proteus Marine Renewables, Drew Blaxland has joined the board of directors at Ocean Energy Europe as a new lead partner.

Proteus is a global leader in marine renewable energy, and is one of the longest operating players in the sector, having developed their AR series of tidal turbines (single axis and bottom mounted) over the past 20 years.

To date the company’s technology has generated over of 20GwH of electricity.

Blaxland said, “Proteus Marine Renewables’ personnel have been at the forefront of tidal energy for over two decades, and we remain committed to advancing the sector towards full commercialisation.

“Joining the Ocean Energy Europe Board is an exciting opportunity to collaborate with industry leaders and policymakers to drive real momentum in marine renewables. With major projects underway in the UK, France, and Japan, we are proving that tidal energy is scalable, reliable, and ready to play a key role in the global energy transition.”

The company is said to be developing some of the most “emblematic” projects in the tidal sector. These include:

Offshore services to the first large-scale 6MW tidal array, Meygen, in Scotland’s Pentland Firth, installed in 2018. Proteus recently signed an MOU with SKF and GE Vernova to supply 59MW to MeyGen PLC, bringing the site to at least 65MW this decade

Normandie Hydroliennes NH1 Project in France’s Raz Blanchard, which aims to deploy a 12MW array, of four 3MW tidal turbines, in 2027, and which won €31m support from the EU Innovation Fund

Most recently, Proteus has deployed the AR1100 system (1.1MW tidal turbine) in the Naru Strait of the Goto Islands for the Japanese government

Rémi Gruet, chief executive of Ocean Energy Europe, said, ‘’It is fantastic to see Proteus Marine Renewables take the step to join our board of directors. They have been a sector leader for many years, and it is great to see them take on a more prominent role at OEE as they prepare to deliver significant projects around the world. I look forward to working with Drew and the Proteus team to keep the momentum towards commercialisation.’’
