RICS modernises CPD and launches member app

by Simon Foulds

RICS updates CPD and launches app supporting digital construction professionals navigating rapid industry transformation worldwide.

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has introduced a revised Continuing Professional Development framework designed to support more than 130,000 members working across property, infrastructure, and the digital construction sector.

The outcomes-based model enables professionals to target learning aligned with emerging industry demands, including artificial intelligence in construction, environmental sustainability compliance, net zero building assessments, and climate risk analysis in property valuation.

Global consultation revealed surveyors increasingly require expertise in technologies and legislation developed after qualification, including AI-powered valuation tools and new regulatory requirements influencing asset performance and client reporting.

The updated framework strengthens professional accountability, ensuring continuing professional development in digital construction translates into measurable improvements in service delivery, professional judgement, and protection of public interest.

RICS member app

Alongside the framework update, RICS has launched a global member app for Android and Apple devices, supporting professionals managing CPD requirements and maintaining professional status efficiently.

The app allows members to log and track CPD activity, manage their professional profile, access a digital RICS member ID, and receive automated reminders regarding obligations. Centralising these tools supports digital construction professionals seeking efficient CPD compliance management while maintaining professional standards expected by clients and regulators operating within complex built environment projects.

Professional standards, technology, and public interest

Christine O’Rourke, RICS Director of Professional Standards, explained the change: “RICS professionals are trusted to give the public and their clients accurate, up-to-date advice, and that trust depends on our members staying current as the industry evolves.

“Whether it’s understanding how climate risks affect property values, applying new regulations, or using emerging technologies responsibly, surveyors need to keep learning throughout their careers.”

She added that consultation feedback confirmed members want systems that help them respond effectively to sector change while protecting public interest. The revised framework is now active, with the member app being deployed globally to RICS professionals.

Updated RICS CPD requirements and the member app position digital construction professionals to deliver accountable services, strengthen compliance, and support informed, sustainable built environment decisions globally today.
