Strong UK performance fuels growth momentum

by Simon Foulds

Balfour Beatty’s 2025 half-year results paint a confident picture for the infrastructure group, with strong UK results driving growth across its earnings-based businesses and a £19.5bn order book setting the stage for sustained performance into 2026.

The Group remains on track to meet full-year expectations, with Chief Executive Leo Quinn pointing to the company’s resilient cash generation, improved margins, and a lower-risk contract portfolio as the foundations for future returns. “Our continuing strong cash generation is underpinned by a growing order book with improved margins and lower risk contract forms,” Quinn said, highlighting momentum across UK Construction, Support Services, and targeted US growth.

Headline numbers from the half-year 2025 results

  • Underlying profit from operations (PFO) for earnings-based businesses rose 7% to £108m (2024: £101m)
  • UK Construction achieved its 3% margin target a year ahead of schedule
  • Support Services PFO surged 35% to £46m, powered by the booming power transmission market
  • US Construction saw mixed fortunes — Buildings delivered strong growth, offset by cost overruns on a single Civils project
  • Infrastructure Investments recorded a £10m loss, with £30–£40m in disposals expected for the full year
  • Average net cash climbed to £1.102bn, strengthening the balance sheet and enabling £188m in shareholder returns so far in 2025

UK construction and support services lead the charge

The UK Construction arm delivered profitable growth, hitting its long-standing margin target 12 months early — an achievement underpinned by disciplined project selection and robust execution.

Meanwhile, Support Services was the star performer, posting a 35% profit increase thanks to high demand in the power transmission sector. This aligns neatly with the UK Government’s recently announced infrastructure pipeline, which includes major energy and nuclear projects such as Sizewell C, positioning Balfour Beatty to capture a significant share of future work.

Order book and pipeline point to long-term stability

At £19.5bn, the order book not only reflects current market strength but also provides earnings visibility well into 2026 and beyond. In addition, the company is eyeing a £20bn ten-year pipeline of potential work — from national grid upgrades to large-scale nuclear infrastructure — further bolstering its growth outlook.

Resilient balance sheet supports shareholder returns

Balfour Beatty’s average net cash position remains well above the £1bn mark, providing the financial muscle for sustained dividend growth and share buybacks. The half-year dividend is up 11% to 4.2p per share, with management reaffirming its commitment to sustainable, long-term shareholder value creation.

Looking ahead

With strong UK performance, disciplined US market expansion, and high-quality infrastructure opportunities in the pipeline, Balfour Beatty is positioned for further growth into 2026. The combination of a robust order book, cash-rich balance sheet, and proven delivery capability makes the group a standout in the UK’s infrastructure sector as it navigates an era of unprecedented investment in energy, transport, and defence.
