First Local Hub on digital transformation in Bogotá

by Simon Foulds

ZIGURAT Institute of Technology has successfully hosted its first Local Hub in Bogotá, uniting more than thirty professionals from the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector to explore the impact of digital transformation in construction and the growing role of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in shaping infrastructure projects.

A platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange

Organised in collaboration with ZIGURAT’s Colombian partners — WSP and Constructora Colpatria — the event brought together students, alumni, and industry professionals for a day of networking and professional development. The Bogotá Local Hub provided an open space to discuss the opportunities and challenges of implementing digital construction technologies within Colombia’s rapidly evolving built environment.

The event featured keynote presentations and case studies from leading professionals including Maria Leaños, William Caballero, Erika López Junco, Diego Armando Mayorga Niño, and David Santiago Prieto Guzmán. Their sessions highlighted practical applications of BIM, lessons learned from complex construction projects, and strategies for managing digital workflows across the lifecycle of buildings and infrastructure.

Spotlight on the Bogotá Metro Project

One of the central discussions focused on the Bogotá Metro Line 1 project, a landmark infrastructure initiative designed to reshape urban mobility in the Colombian capital. With WSP actively involved in the project, attendees were given first-hand insights into both the technical and social dimensions of delivering a metro system in one of Latin America’s most densely populated cities.

Speakers explored how BIM and digital project delivery are helping stakeholders address the challenges of large-scale infrastructure construction in urban environments, from improving coordination among multidisciplinary teams to ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency.

Strengthening global connections through local hubs

The Bogotá gathering is part of ZIGURAT’s Local Hubs programme, a global initiative that strengthens connections within the AEC community through in-person knowledge-sharing events. Earlier in 2025, Local Hubs were held in Barcelona and across three cities in Brazil, creating opportunities for professionals to exchange expertise and explore innovative digital construction practices.

Looking ahead, ZIGURAT will expand its international outreach with the next Local Hub scheduled to take place in Riyadh this October, further consolidating its position as a leader in digital transformation education for the construction sector.

Driving digital transformation in the AEC industry

By creating a platform where global expertise meets local challenges, ZIGURAT continues to advance its mission of empowering AEC professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to lead the sector’s digital evolution. Through its Local Hubs, the institute is not only promoting the adoption of BIM, digital project delivery, and construction technology but also building a stronger, more connected international community.
